The principal had previously worked at Lord Byng high school where, in November 2018, there was a serious incident of racism that resulted in a police investigation and a complaint filed at BC's Human Rights Commission.

Many parents at Lord Roberts had been aware of the racist incident at Lord Byng, and they also voiced their concerns to the PAC executive about the role that the principal played in the incident. Parents were upset by the reports that students at Lord Byng had previously dressed up as the KKK, and a child's locker had been defaced with the N-word. Particularly worrisome for Lord Roberts' PAC were concerns about sending their grade 6 and 7 students to King George after hearing about the negative impact on students who no longer felt safe at school and suffered trauma from the event.

Other parents wrote to Ms. Hoffman about their concerns and were told that the incident at "Lord Byng Secondary was one in which we collectively as educators and as an education system have committed to learning from as we move forward in ensuring all schools are places of learning that are safe, supportive and inclusive for everyone." Ms. Hoffman further stated that "the District has confidence in [the King George principal] and his commitment to ensuring all students and families are safe and welcome at King George Secondary."

This information was shared with Lord Roberts PAC at their February general meeting, and the decision was made to make further inquiries with the VSB about how these learnings will be translated to concrete actions. The Lord Roberts PAC is seeking to understand how VSB will identify and eliminate racism, bring tangible and positive outcomes across the VSB as a whole, and more specifically by District administrators. Understanding VSB's expectations around anti-discrimination and anti-racism training and processes will help the PAC feel confident that all students in the West End community of schools will be safe and welcome.

The Lord Roberts PAC welcomes the opportunity to meet with VSB staff and Trustees to discuss this at their general meeting in April or May.

We look forward to hearing back from you.

Sincerely,
Ian Rowe
Chair, Lord Roberts PAC

Extension of Comox Street Separated Bike Lane

https://www.lordrobertspac.ca/news/extension-of-comox-street-separated-bike-lane

https://www.lordrobertspac.ca/news/extension-of-comox-street-separated-bike-lane#comments

Uncategorized

In the February General PAC meeting parents voted to support the bike lane petition circulated by Lucy Maloney (285 signatures) by sending a letter to the City of Vancouver. The vast majority of people who have signed the petition are PAC members, including PAC executive members.

Our parent community is aligned that this will reduce traffic dangers posed to our children, decrease pollution, improve drop off and pick up flow, and encourage active transport in the West End. Traffic safety and congestion on Comox Street, and around the school, was a significant issue of concern for parents in the PAC's annual parent survey conducted by the PAC, and has been a topic of concern for many years at our school.

This issue was voted on at the PAC meeting on 20 February 2020 and the motion to support the petition was passed unanimously by all attendees.

Please direct enquiries to the petition coordinator Lucy Maloney [phone number removed] or to myself, PAC Chair Ian Rowe at [phone number removed].

Thank you,
Ian Rowe
Chair, Lord Roberts Parent Advisory Committee

Pizza lunch dates are locked in for the rest of the school year – Yay!

https://www.lordrobertspac.ca/news/pizza-lunch-dates-are-locked-in-for-the-rest-of-the-school-year-yay

https://www.lordrobertspac.ca/news/pizza-lunch-dates-are-locked-in-for-the-rest-of-the-school-year-yay#comments

Uncategorized

See below for all information you need regarding Pizza Lunch – any questions or queries, please email Anna, our Super Pizza Mom, at pizza@robertspac.ca Dates – mark them on your calendar now!February 7March 6April 17May 8June 12First order deadline was January 31. All orders are done online! With the support of the PACs, the funds ($10,000 each for both Lord Roberts Elementary and King George Secondary) will be distributed using simplified participatory budgeting model to help the youth of the West End more deeply engage and understand the participatorybudgeting process.

Beyond the funds that this brings, it is a wonderful way to celebrate Chris and Kathryn. If you did not have the chance to meet her, Christine Fretwell was a big part of our PAC for many years. Even in her last years of life she was an active part of our school community. This is a truly fitting tribute to her and her contributions to our school.

Please support this initiative by voting online or in person at the school.

Please share this with your friends and colleagues who live or work in the West End.

Thank you,
Lord Roberts PAC Chair 2019/2020
Ian Rowe

MORE DETAILS AND VOTING
https://vancouver.ca/your-government/participatory-budgeting.aspx
