School Street Program at Roberts
The School Street program is NOT running again this year - Comox Street is no longer closed to motor vehicles at drop off and pickup times between Bidwell & Cardero Streets to improve safety and encourage Roberts families to leave the car at home and use active transport (walk, cycle, roll or transit) to get to and from school.
Driving families are asked to continue to use Bidwell and Pendrell Streets only for motor vehicle pickup and drop off and to leave Comox Greenway, which is part of Vancouver's official AAA active transport network, to families that use active transport to get to and from school.
The City of Vancouver will be conducting another round of public consultation in the second half of 2023 regarding the Comox Year Round School Street Project, a proposal to permanently close the block of Comox St adjacent to the school to motor vehicle traffic, creating a permanent parklet. Background:
In January 2020 the PAC submitted a petition signed by approximately 300 Roberts parents and caregivers asking the City of Vancouver to extend the protected bike lane between Denman St and Bidwell St up past the school to Cardero St to provide a safe route to school for families using active transport.
In partnership with the City of Vancouver, the PAC piloted the School Street program at Roberts in spring 2021, and continued the program for the full 2021-2022 and 2022-23 school years. A School Street is a car-free block adjacent to a school open to walking, biking and rolling during school pick-up and drop-off times. School Streets help to improve health and safety by reducing vehicle traffic and emissions adjacent to the school.

School Street Details:
The School Street program was in effect at Roberts, run by PAC volunteers until 29 June 2023 on all school days on Comox Street between Cardero Street and Bidwell Street from 8:40 - 9:10 AM and 2:40 - 3:30 PM.
During these times, vehicle entry and exit along this block was prohibited. The street was closed to motor vehicle traffic and only open to people walking, cycling or rolling.
Need to drive?
Our school encourages all students, who can, to get to and from school in active ways. There are many benefits for students to walk, cycle and roll to school – including both physical and mental health benefits. Having said that, we understand that some parents need to drive their children.
We urge parents who can, particularly with older children, to determine safe locations about a five-minute walk (or a few blocks away) from the school where they can drop-off and pick-up their children. Older students can walk on their own from the drop-off location. This will leave more space closer to the school for parents with younger students or accessibility needs.
Please continue to follow the parking signage and park only in designated areas (see parking map attached). If you need to park for longer than a few minutes, please find a parking spot that is designated for longer periods. Roberts parents regularly receive tickets for overstaying the designated time permitted adjacent to the school.
Please be considerate towards other driving parents and move out of the parking spaces adjacent to the school as quickly as possible during drop off and pickup times. Other drivers are waiting for spaces to free up!
