School Street Program at Roberts

The School Street program is running again this year - Comox Street is closed to motor vehicles at drop off and pickup times between Bidwell & Cardero Streets to improve safety and encourage Roberts families to leave the car at home and use active transport (walk, cycle, roll or transit) to get to and from school.
Volunteers are needed to operate the School Street (unlock, set up and supervise the barriers at each end of the street). For more information and to sign up to volunteer follow this link: https://volunteersignup.org/44RJL and if you have any questions about volunteering on our School Street, please email robertsactivetransport@gmail.com.
Background:
In partnership with the City of Vancouver, the PAC piloted the School Street program at Roberts in spring 2021, and continued the program for the full 2021-2022 school year. A School Street is a car-free block adjacent to a school open to walking, biking and rolling during school pick-up and drop-off times. School Streets help to improve health and safety by reducing vehicle traffic and emissions adjacent to the school.

The 2022-23 School Street program will be in effect at Roberts from:
During these times, vehicle entry and exit along this block is prohibited. The street will be closed to motor vehicle traffic and only open to people walking, cycling or rolling.
Need to drive?
Our school encourages all students, who can, to get to and from school in active ways. There are many benefits for students to walk, cycle and roll to school – including both physical and mental health benefits. Having said that, we understand that some parents need to drive their children.
We urge parents who can, particularly with older children, to determine safe locations about a five-minute walk (or a few blocks away) from the school where they can drop-off and pick-up their children. Older students can walk on their own from the drop-off location. This will leave more space closer to the school for parents with younger students or accessibility needs.
Please continue to follow the parking signage and park only in designated areas (see parking map attached). If you need to park for longer than a few minutes, please find a parking spot that is designated for longer periods. Roberts parents regularly receive tickets for overstaying the designated time permitted adjacent to the school.
Please be considerate towards other driving parents and move out of the parking spaces adjacent to the school as quickly as possible during drop off and pickup times. Other drivers are waiting for spaces to free up!
Accessibility
Pendrell and Bidwell will remain accessible by motor vehicle as needed. Two additional parking spaces (east side of the parking lot entrance on Pendrell) will be provided for families with accessibility needs. Please reach out to me directly or the City if you have accessibility concerns.
Questions/Feedback
If you have questions about the program please reach out to the City of Vancouver at: SchoolActiveTravel@vancouver.ca and/ or visit: vancouver.ca/SchoolStreets.
Parents will be invited to provide feedback through a parent survey sent at the end of the program. Residents have already been notified via letter and encouraged to reach out to the City with feedback.
